Live Traces is a new online platform for contemporary live art and performance in Europe, funded and supported by the Central School of Speech and Drama. The website revolves around a changing theme relating to live performance, constantly provoking fresh discussion. For Live Trace’s pilot they reflect on and respond to the title of the magazine Live Traces, looking at the re-enactment and documentation of live events. Springboarding from the theme Live Traces offers a critical dissemination of live art practices, alongside covering newly commissioned work by live artists. Four artists were commissioned for the inaugural online residencies, to view an archive of my residency please click here.

The South West Camerata acted as a mobile bandstand, traveling around Central Park, Plymouth. The music played was selected through conversations held with the park users; discussions about notions of heroism and macho icons of pop culture.

The music played included:

Harry Potter: Hedwig’s Theme, John Williams

John Wayne and Clint Eastwood: Hoedown, Aaron Copland

Captain Jack Sparrow: Pirates of the Caribbean theme, Hans Zimmer

Indiana Jones: The Indiana Jones theme, John Williams

Rocky: Eye of the Tiger, Survivor

Bandstand was commissioned as part of Plymouth City Council and Plymouth College of Art’s Art in Central Park public art and engagement programme.

The work ‘O.S.T.’ seeks to glamourise the quotidian. Viewers are invited to narrate their week, which is set to a tailored soundtrack.  For the ultimate in mundane heroism, participants can hire a mobile DJ to follow them for a day, setting their everyday actions to music.

Work IV.

Participatory performance works blur the line between between audience and artist/performer. Authorship is questioned: collaborators, conspirators and audience act as participants, and make the outcome of the work surprising both to myself and the viewer. The work plays with notions of the performer, ego and heroism, and responds to iconic performative works such as Sophie Calle’s ‘The Shadow’ and Cindy Sherman’s   ‘Unititled Film Stills’ series. It embraces a sense of absurdity and humour, and juxtaposes lofty notions of the heroic performer with the everyday.
